Water Conservation Art Contest

Voting is now LIVE for 2025 Water Conservation Art Contest

View and vote for students’ water-wise art from finalists across the Tri-Valley

Zone 7 Water Agency, in partnership with the Tri-Valley’s retail water providers, is excited to announce voting is live for the 2025 Tri-Valley Water Conservation Art Contest from May 1 through May 10. The contest was open to all K-12 students from Livermore, Pleasanton, Dublin and the Dougherty Valley area of San Ramon. The Tri-Valley Water Partners committee members selected finalists from each retailer area that represented this year’s theme: “Habitat Heroes: Transforming Lawns into Vibrant Native Gardens.” The community is invited to view all of the art and vote for their favorite to receive a grand prize iPad.

Students were asked to submit art highlighting the benefits of replacing water-wasting lawns with water-efficient native plants, which provide essential habitat for birds, insects, and other wildlife.

242 students submitted beautiful artwork showcasing how replacing traditional thirsty lawns with California native plant gardens can conserve water, support biodiversity, and build healthier habitats.

“This contest empowers students to use their creativity to inspire change in our community,” said Valerie Pryor, General Manager of Zone 7 Water Agency. “By creating art that showcases the beauty and benefits of native gardens, students inspire families to replace their lawns with sustainable habitats that conserve water and support local wildlife, encouraging a deeper connection to the environment and a lasting impact on water conservation.”

Inspiring students as water champions
The Tri-Valley Water Conservation Art Contest aligns closely with Zone 7 Water Agency’s broader educational program to empower students as stewards of California’s water resources. Reimagined for the 2023-24 school year to reengage schools in proactive water education, the Zone 7 Water Academy introduces interactive, standards-aligned lessons taught by certified educators that inspire lifelong water champions. From Transitional Kindergarten to high school, these lessons provide hands-on, academically rigorous activities, including water cycle models and stories about saving water, to spark curiosity and understanding. The art contest extends this mission, providing students with a creative outlet to apply their knowledge and advocacy while fostering a shared commitment to sustainability and equipping young leaders to address pressing water challenges today and in the future.

About Zone 7 Water
Zone 7 Water Agency is one of the 10 active zones of the Alameda County Flood Control and Water Conservation District. The District was established by the State Legislature in October 1949 to solve problems of flooding, drainage, channel erosion and water supply and conservation in Alameda County. In 1957, by popular vote, Zone 7 became a special district governed by a seven-member board of directors. Along with flood protection, Zone 7 supplies water to all of eastern Alameda County and a population of over a quarter million residents. Treated water is sold wholesale to local retailers, including the cities of Livermore and Pleasanton, the Dublin San Ramon Services District, and the California Water Service Company. Zone 7 also distributes untreated water to local agriculture operations and golf courses.
